A Request from the WTGS Youth Education Committee Chairman

ECISD has numerous mini-camps every summer (around mid-July) for students in the GT program from grades 1-6. It is called Camp SIP (Scholars in Progress) and is broken down into camps for math, biology, English, even dance and theatrical arts, etc. They have a geology camp this year. I have been contacted by the teacher running the geo-camp, and we need some help!! J

  1. Does anyone know of an area close by the Odessa/Midland area where we could take these kiddos in search of fossils or really cool rocks? We only have until 2:45pm every day (I think it’ll be 4 days total for both “mini-camps”) so it can’t be very far out.
  2. Does anyone have some fossil samples of the fauna and flora that was abundant around here in Permian times? I will make sure they are returned to you, unless you would like to donate them to the Youth Education Committee for use in our youth education presentations at our elementary schools.
  3. Any suggestions are welcome. Anyone have any suggestions about some lesson plan ideas she could kick around and build on?

Thanks so much in advance for ANY help you can give us. I told her the best way to find out all this stuff is to ask the largest, smartest and kindest group of geoscientists in the area!! (Does the flattery help?? J)

Please email me at dlampman@claytonwilliams.com or give me a call at 413-5467 if you can help with any of these items.

Thanks again everyone! Have a great week!
