Thursday evening, May 31st, at the Midland Petroleum Club, the West Texas Geological Society recognized 5 of the 11 recipients of the 2012 scholarships. These scholarships are given in memory of Bernold M. Hanson, R.L. “Bert” Swanson, John Emery Adams and E. Russell Lloyd to students from the Permian Basin area pursuing studies in earth sciences (geology, geophysics and petroleum engineering). Those able to attend our annual awards banquet were treated to outstanding dining and some great stories of great geologists and contributors to the society. We can be assured that our scholarships are being invested in some outstanding young people. Read on and learn at bit more about their backgrounds and put a face to a name in the accompanying picture.

Several student recipients were unable to join us and will be honored later in the summer. Hopefully, you will get a chance to meet these future scientists as they become involved in our community and attend meetings. Most of us remember someone who gave us a helping hand, a first job, an internship, some valuable training or maybe a job to make it during the tough times in the business. We are glad to honor these and look forward to meeting our other recipients in the future as we welcome all of them to our WTGS events.
