 Machine Learning 101

Robert Villegas

Core Geologic

Over the past few years, the field of data science and analytics has seen tremendous growth in the oil and gas industry. Buzz words like machine learning and AI have become commonplace and are often used incorrectly to generate client interest. The goal of this talk is to give a ‘behind the scenes’ look at machine learning and will attempt to dispel some of the myths within the industry. We will discuss the differences between supervised and unsupervised learning and examine some of the commonly used machine learning algorithms like linear regression, decision trees, and random forests.

Robert Villegas is a Data Scientist with Core Geologic in Houston. In 2016 he received his Master’s in Geology from the University of Texas at Arlington, where he focused on nano-petrophysical studies of unconventional reservoirs. After entering the petroleum industry, he soon realized there were vast amounts of data that was often overlooked and underutilized. In 2019, Robert decided to peruse a Master’s in Analytics from Texas A&M and will be completing his education in May of this year. He specializes in using machine learning algorithms to better understand the subsurface.

There is no charge for this virtual luncheon meeting, but you must register to get the Zoom link by Monday, April 12th at 3pm
