The Challenges of Integrating Geoscience Data into Portfolio Optimization

Lewis Matthews

Project Geminae

Abstract:

At the heart of oil and gas portfolio optimization is a sequencing problem connected to three major systems (financial, subsurface, and surface). Uncertainty exists in all three systems. For this example, we will walk through a deterministic Monte Carlo Simulation and discuss the properties of a typical unconventional Permian portfolio. We will demonstrate how we can simply modify this deterministic implementation to estimate uncertainty in a subsurface system and flow that uncertainty through to the financials. Ultimately, this is an accessible talk for engineers, geoscientists, and managers

Bio:

Lewis Matthews is a co-founder of Project Geminae, a company that specializes in quantitative oil and gas portfolio optimization software. Prior to Project Geminae, Lewis was employed as a senior data scientist for CrownQuest Operating where he received a daily humbling playing with spacing-completion optimization. Lewis is a Veteran of the US Navy where he served as a Corpsman of Marines for 9 years. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University, where for his MS thesis, independently discovered fractal clustering in petrophysical well logs. An independent discovery that is still remarkably interesting to this day, but, for all intents and purposes, completely useless in real world application.

Please make your reservations no later than Friday, September 10th at 3pm.  Cost for lunch is $25 w/reservation and $35 w/o reservation.  Seating and lunch are limited availability for those without reservations.

If cancellations are not made 24 hours in advance you will be billed for the luncheon.  Luncheon count given to caterer is based on reservation numbers and WTGS has to pay for the lunch whether you show up or not.
