Home / Youth Education

WTGS members have worked hard to get where we are today. By volunteering and giving back to the youth in our communities, we can assure ourselves that there will be an exciting and positive future ahead of us all. The few minutes you spend with students could be the few minutes that change their lives.

We have several youth outreach opportunities available in the Midland/Odessa area and WE would like YOU to get involved! Please consider participating in one of the following activities to help educate the youth in our community. You can contact your WTGS Youth Education Committee Members for more information…

WTGS Youth Education Committee 2012-2013 Project Overview

Maps in Schools –

We currently have maps in all Midland public and private elementaries with the exception of Milam Elementary

We have 3 maps that are framed and ready to be presented to Parker, Sam Houston and Trinity in Midland.

We have 6 maps ready for Odessa Schools (Cameron, Dowling, Gonzales, Milam, Noel and Reagan)

We still need maps for the 15 remaining public elementary schools in Odessa.

Sponsorship information will be made available by mid-September

Midland College Science Extravaganza –

Science Extravaganza is to be held on Friday, April 12, 2013

Margaret Wade at MC is already accepting donations and sponsorships for the Extravaganza.  The society’s members donated $1200 last year, we are trying to beat that this year.

Earth Science Presentations –

We will speak with the schools soon to double check the information in the PowerPoint presentations we use to make sure they still cover the testing material the students need.  We always need more volunteers!  presentations are made between late February to early April, depending on testing schedules. (STAAR test dates TBA)

High School Recruitment Videos

Our newest member, Bo McCarthy, has been working to get the UT Jackson School of Geosciences “Be a Geo” video shown in the high schools.  This video is our attempt to show high school students how exciting a geological career can be! Check out the website (http://beageo.com/) for more information and to see the amazing video!

Past Events

On March 4, 2011, a Lunch and Learn “training” seminar was hosted at the MISD Science and Math Center from 11:30-1:30. Lunch was provided courtesy of Clayton Williams Energy, Inc. The purpose of the meeting is to integrate the MISD science coach’s and teacher’s skills with our volunteer group’s knowledge to develop the most effective way to deliver our PowerPoint presentation (developed by the Youth Education Committee) to students while maintaining a high interest and excitement level. Several volunteers showed up (pics, right) and a good time was had by all.
