A Lithium Primer for Oil and Gas and A Discovery in Nevada

 Colton Dudley

Lithium exploration has led to a large Pliocene evaporite sequence and associated brine in Railroad Valley, Nevada.  The 23 billion barrel recoverable mineral-rich brine and 85 billion ton solid salt deposit discovery is one of the largest sodium-rich deposits in the world. The brine itself covers over 55 square miles, 2,500 ft thickness, and contains 370,000 parts per million (ppm) total dissolved solids. Analyses indicate several complex salt groups are present, and the primary industrial minerals identified so far are sodium, potassium, sulfate, phosphorus, boron, tungsten, and lithium. Exploration and development of lithium and its constituents is challenging for geoscientists and engineers; nonetheless, these challenges can be overcome using historically proven petroleum and mining techniques to characterize subsurface reservoirs.

BIO: Colton Dudley is currently president of RichRock Resources, LLC, a consulting and resource company. He develops and invests in oil and gas prospects and holds geophysical consulting positions at two lithium companies. He recently held the position of Geophysicist at Concho Resources (now ConocoPhillips) and has been involved in drilling over 300 petroleum and mineral wells.

Mr. Dudley supplied geophysical expertise within a team who found millions of barrels of oil and gas in the Permian Basin. For his geophysical expertise, he was appointed Senior Geophysicist at 3PL Operating, LLC where he helped delineate a multi-mineral, lithium-bearing evaporite sequence and predicted the formation within 10 ft. His company has oil and gas production in Texas and Louisiana and is engaged in petroleum prospecting. He has a bachelors in Geological Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno and masters in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines. Colton in his free time loves to fish, travel, and spend time with friends and family. He lives in Austin, Texas.
