Freddy Hagins

Coring from 1975 through 2023

Abstract

In 1975 core barrel lengths were only 30' and 60' long with steel inner barrels, limited diamond bit types, and the Kelly Rig. As the coring industry made improvements to equipment to recover a better-quality core, several changes have been introduced. I will cover each of these changes as they occurred with purpose for improvement and comment if they were successful or not, and if not, why. The coring industry has also had outside improvements that have resulted in benefits to coring such as drilling rigs, mud systems, lab analysis, and fracking technology. I will cover these in part, as well as changes in barrel length, inner barrel, and liners, bit types and sizes, as well as multiple coring options.
